Google AI Max is getting new briefing and reporting capabilities. My first question is practical: will the team use the extra visibility to make a better decision, or simply produce another dashboard?
On 23 September 2026, Google announced additional languages for the closed beta of AI Brief and a forthcoming report connecting search terms, creative assets and landing pages. The announcement says further availability details will follow later this year. This is an announcement of capabilities, not evidence that every advertiser already has access.
For growth teams, the useful response is to review the brief, the destination and the conversion definition together. Automation can expand delivery. The business still has to decide which enquiries are worth acquiring.

What the Google AI Max announcement actually says
AI Brief lets advertisers describe business context, audiences and messaging in natural language. Google is extending its closed beta to Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. The proposed reporting view will connect the query that triggered an ad, the creative shown and the page a visitor reached.
Read Google’s 23 September announcement for the original scope. Do not build a launch plan around an assumed account rollout date.
My interpretation: visibility across these touchpoints could make a relevance review easier. It does not, by itself, establish incremental revenue. A report can help explain delivery while leaving unanswered whether the campaign created customers who would otherwise never have purchased.
Seven practical Google AI Max checks
1. Define a useful conversion before reviewing CPA
For Google AI Max, a form submission, a qualified brief and a signed contract are different outcomes. If the primary goal counts every form equally, the team may reward campaigns that create low-value work for sales. Document the eligibility rule, the time window and the owner who confirms qualification.
For a course provider, “enrolled” might mean an account, a paid seat or a learner who attended. Agree on one definition before comparing reports.
2. Put exclusions into the business brief
A useful Google AI Max brief names the market served, the buyer, the offer and the conditions that make someone unsuitable. A consultancy serving English-speaking product teams should make that scope explicit. “Find people interested in growth” is too broad to guide a useful review.
Keep the brief readable enough that marketing and sales can agree on it. Product names and tool lists are supporting context; the customer problem is the core.
3. Review the promise and destination together
Review Google AI Max by following the journey from the search query to the ad and then the page. Does the landing page answer the same question? Can the visitor see who the offer serves, what happens next and what information they need?
A relevant ad cannot rescue a vague service page. A clear page cannot rescue an offer shown to an ineligible audience. Review the combination rather than treating each asset as a separate task.
4. Give lead quality a named owner
Google AI Max campaign reporting needs a feedback loop from the people receiving enquiries. Ask sales to record why a lead is qualified or rejected using a small set of consistent reasons. Include “unknown” so staff are not forced to invent an explanation.
Review a sample of records against the criteria. A subjective label entered inconsistently is weak evidence, even when it appears in a polished chart.
5. Compare cohorts with enough time to mature
A lead acquired yesterday has had less time to close than one acquired last month. Report acquisition cohorts and a consistent follow-up window. If the sales cycle is still unfolding, label the result as immature rather than calling the campaign unsuccessful.
Also align geography, offer and conversion definitions. A lower CPA may reflect a changed mix rather than improved performance for the original audience.
6. Separate attribution from incrementality
In Google AI Max reporting, an attributed conversion is assigned under the reporting system’s rules. An incremental conversion is one caused by the intervention. Those questions require different evidence.
Where feasible, use an appropriately designed experiment with a primary outcome and guardrails agreed in advance. Where it is not feasible, explain the observational limits instead of turning a before-and-after comparison into a causal claim.
7. Keep a decision log
Record the change, the reason, the expected outcome and the date of review. If targeting, copy, budget and landing pages all change together, it becomes harder to explain what happened. A short change log is often more useful than another dashboard tab.
The customer journey audit framework provides a broader way to review acquisition and activation together.
A worked Google AI Max business example
This is a fictional teaching example, not a client result. Campaign A spends $1,000 and creates 50 enquiries; ten are qualified. Campaign B spends $1,000 and creates 30 enquiries; 15 are qualified.
| Measure | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per enquiry | $20 | $33.33 |
| Qualified enquiries | 10 | 15 |
| Spend per qualified enquiry | $100 | $66.67 |
B looks more expensive on the first metric and more efficient on the second. Neither calculation proves which campaign creates more profit. We still need sales outcomes, contribution margin, delivery capacity and an appropriate comparison window.
I would investigate the quality difference before recommending a budget increase. Is it the audience, the message, the destination, or inconsistent qualification? That is a concrete next question.
What I would do this week
First, check account availability and preserve the current campaign baseline. Then review one high-spend journey, inspect a manageable sample of enquiries and agree on the next decision with sales. Make one reviewable change with a clear owner and date.
For a small business, this can be a focused working session. The output should be a definition, an evidence gap and an action, rather than a promise that automation will solve the funnel.
Google AI Max questions teams ask
Is the new report available to everyone?
The September announcement says Google will share further availability details later this year. Verify access in your account before relying on it.
Should a lower CPA trigger more spend?
Only after checking outcome quality, cohort maturity and business economics. A cheaper submission is useful when it contributes to the right downstream result.
What should a marketer practise?
Write one brief that connects audience, promise, destination and a measurable outcome. Then explain what evidence would change your recommendation.
