Google’s September 2026 Spam Update: What Marketers Should Watch in October

The September 2026 spam update is a reason to review your SEO evidence, not to rewrite your entire website overnight. For growth marketers, the useful question is whether a change in search visibility is affecting qualified visits and enquiries—and what evidence would justify a fix.

News checked on 1 October 2026. The monitoring framework below is my practical recommendation, not a list of new requirements announced by Google.

What Google has confirmed about the September 2026 spam update

Google’s Search Status Dashboard records the update starting on 24 September 2026 at 09:15 US/Pacific. Google says it applies across countries and languages, with deployment potentially lasting two weeks. At the time of this check, that incident page did not include a completion notice.

The announcement does not identify specific industries, page formats or an AI-writing tool as the target. Do not turn an industry rumour into a fact about your own site.

AI-generated content: review the value, not just the tool

Google’s spam policies describe scaled content abuse as large amounts of content created mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help readers. AI-generated pages can fall into that category; so can pages produced in other ways. Its policies also address manipulative links and hidden content.

My editorial test is simple: would a potential customer learn something useful from this page that they could not get from a generic summary?

  • Keep: a clear explanation with a worked example, a defined audience and an actionable next step.
  • Improve: a useful topic that lacks sources, concrete examples or a clear answer.
  • Investigate: dozens of near-identical pages, unsupported claims or articles that exist only to repeat keywords.

For a fintech website, “how verification works” should explain the actual stages and customer questions. Replacing a country name in the same article twenty times does not create twenty distinct insights. This is a hypothetical editorial example, not a claim that Google has singled out fintech in this update.

Build an October monitoring sheet before changing pages

Create one row per important landing page. Record its purpose, target query group, publication date, last meaningful edit and the business action it supports. Add separate notes for releases, tracking changes and campaign launches.

Compare matching weekdays across a baseline period and the rollout period. Treat an early comparison as a directional signal. Avoid drawing a conclusion from one low-volume day, and revisit the pattern after Google confirms completion.

1. Search visibility: where did demand change?

In Search Console, compare page and query groups rather than only the site total. Separate branded searches from non-branded discovery. Check country and device patterns, and look for pages moving together. Record impressions, clicks, CTR and average position as distinct signals.

A drop limited to one topic deserves a different investigation from a decline across every landing page. A ranking explanation becomes more plausible when the search-side evidence moves too; it is not proven merely because dates overlap.

2. GA4: what happened after the click?

The GA4 Traffic acquisition report supports session-level source analysis. Use google / organic to examine Google organic visits, then review landing pages, engaged sessions and the key events relevant to your business.

For a consulting website, my suggested measurement chain is article visit → service-page visit → enquiry. An email-link click is a useful intent signal, but it does not prove that an email was sent or a qualified lead was created. Measure completed enquiries separately where your implementation allows it.

Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions are different measures. Consent choices, attribution and implementation can affect the comparison. Use them to investigate a pattern together, not to force identical totals.

3. Business outcomes: did the useful traffic fall?

A hypothetical example: organic sessions fall from 1,000 to 800, while qualified enquiries stay at 12. That is a different problem from sessions staying flat while enquiries fall from 12 to 4. The first calls for a traffic-quality review; the second calls for a closer look at intent, the offer and the enquiry journey.

Neither example identifies the cause on its own. That is why I prefer a short investigation log over a dramatic “recovery” claim.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Verify access: check indexing settings, redirects and whether priority pages can be reached.
  2. Verify measurement: test the tag and important events before blaming SEO.
  3. Locate the change: identify the affected page and query groups.
  4. Review substance: find the missing answer, evidence or customer context.
  5. Make a bounded improvement: change the relevant pages and log exactly what changed.

Avoid deleting useful articles or buying links because a graph moved. A content decision should have a reader problem and a measurable reason behind it.

Connect the update review to your wider growth strategy

Search visibility is only one stage of acquisition. My earlier guide to AI Search 2026 and visibility that converts connects discoverability with useful action. For product teams, the same discipline applies further down the funnel: diagnosing the gap between KYC and first transfer means asking where intent stops becoming behaviour.

If your team has traffic data but no clear diagnosis, my Marketing Audit reviews channels, messaging, the funnel and measurement together. The aim is a prioritised action plan—not a guarantee of rankings or an automatic lift in GA4.

Frequently asked questions

Does a traffic drop prove this spam update affected my site?

No. Check search performance, tracking, technical changes and demand before attributing the decline to the update.

Should I stop using AI to write content?

Review the usefulness and accuracy of the output. A tool choice does not replace an editorial standard.

What should I prioritise in October?

Start with the pages that support your actual offer. Verify access and measurement, locate the loss, then improve the answer and the next step.
